Welcome To

Gracie's Scrapbook

Feb. 22, 2005
Gracie was discovered in the Clovis, NM Animal Control Facility by Carol Bell. Carol immediately contacted Candy Beck of GPA-NMGC to report her discovery. Without hesitation Candy agreed to bring Gracie - so named by Carol - into the GPA-NMGC program. A picture was sent and by late afternoon plans has been made for her trip North.

The following is a continuation of Gracie's story...

Feb. 24, 2005
Gracie, in the company of Carol and 5 other rescue dogs, arrived at Clines Corners where they were met by Laurel Drew of A Place For Us Greyhounds. Laurel was picking up a young Staghound from Carol and had offered to bring Gracie back as well.

At 4pm Candy and GPA-NMGC volunteer, Drucie Turner, met Gracie for the first time. It is heartbreaking to see her with ribs and hipbones jutting out and open pressure sores on her flanks and hips. She is shy and frightened. After arriving at her new foster home with Candy & Jerry Beck, Gracie seemed to relax a bit and even favors Candy and Drucie with some kisses. Gracie spent a quiet night on soft blankets.

Feb. 25, 2005
Gracie met her Veterinarian, Dr. Raymond Bouloy, of Manzano Animal Clinic. After a through exam it was decided that Gracie should stay at the clinic to have her wounds tended to, blood work done, and an x-ray taken of her swollen right hind foot. At 4pm, Candy picked up Gracie and was shown the x-rays. All the toes on that foot were broken and did not heal properly. After getting her vaccinations, Gracie headed home for a small dinner and to rest.

After reading Gracie’s tattoos it is discovered that Gracie is, in fact, CJ Chick's Racquel. After speaking with the registered owner, GPA-NMGC learned that she had been at a training facility in Tucumcari, NM and after breaking her foot had been given to "a man from Roswell”. We will continue to investigate and hopefully learn more about her life and how she wound up in Clovis, NM.

Feb. 27
GPA-NMGC received an email from Carol Bell in Clovis, they were able to locate the farmer who found Gracie. He stated that he didn't know where she came from - she just showed up. He said he did feed her for a few days but she wasn't putting on weight so he brought her to Animal Control. It is still a mystery how she made the long journey from Roswell to Clovis. Animal Control in Clovis will do what they can to help as they know this is a obvious case of animal neglect.

Feb. 28
Candy Beck spoke with Gary Guccione of the National Greyhound Assn. (NGA) about our concerns and emailed him information about the situation in a time-line form. Pictures of Gracie were also attached. Mr. Guccione was informed of Gracie's registered name and the name of her registered owner, he assured us that the greyhound facilities involved in the situation would be inspected on the next inspection tour.

March 2
Gracie visited her Vet, Dr. Ray Bouloy. Gracie now weighs 41.1 pounds. Her blood work came back and she was negative for tick borne disease and heartworm. Her thyroid levels were fine, but she is anemic. Dr. Ray feels that is due to malnutrition.

March 16
As I write this Gracie has settled into
family life.

Gracie is now completely housetrained and is showing a wonderful, playful side. Her hip bones are barely visable and her ribs are now almost just a shadow. Her wounds have healed. Gracie's next visit to the vet in April will hopefully show her anemia gone and she will take her next step toward a forever home - Gracie will be spayed.
