THANK YOU CG MAGAZINE

Posted by Candace Beck on May 27th, 2007 .

After receiving and reading the Spring 2007 issue of GC Magazine (Celebrating Greyhounds Magazine) containing the “Special Report: The Juarez Greyhounds”, it brought back many memories both good and bad. It is hard to believe that it has been almost a year since that early morning of June 25, 2006. GPA-NMGC is proud to have played a part in the rescue of the Juarez Greyhounds. and would like to thank CG Magazine for doing this special report.

There was much written concerning Juarez on Greyhound message boards and in articles written on various websites, some supported the efforts of GPA (Greyhound Pets of America), and sadly, some condemned the efforts to bring the Juarez Greyhounds home. Most did not know what was going on in Juarez. With this special report GC Magazine brought the true story to the Greyhound world. We would like to thank CG Magazine Editor-in-Chief, Cindy Hanson for her insightful editorial on Juarez and the situation faced by Pat Roberts, President of GPA-El Paso Lonestar Greyhounds. The editorial has ruffled the feathers of at least two Greyhound “welfare advocates”, both these people publicly embraced euthanasia of Greyhounds in the U.S. as a humane alternative to their shipment to Juarez. A local “advocate” went so far as to accuse GPA of “constructing a plan to support the Mexican track by shipping American racing Greyhounds” to Mexico (GCNM News, Fall 2005, p.8). This “advocate” is now attacking CG Magazine in a newsletter and on the group website. There was much negative mis-information and absurd lies written locally concerning Juarez, GPA-National and GPA-NMGC. It is to be noted that when the opportunity to prove her dedication to Greyhound welfare, the local “advocate” did nothing to help, neither by taking any Juarez Greyhounds into her adoption program or assisting in the transport of the Greyhounds from Juarez back into the U.S.

We at GPA-NMGC would like to thank all those who stepped up and helped save the Juarez Greyhounds, the adoption groups from all across the West who took Juarez Greyhounds into their programs, Barkerhaus Kennel in El Paso, TX. and the volunteers who watched the Greyhounds at the kennel while they waited for the transporter to arrive. Teddy Palmer of Halfway Home Greyhound Adoption who used her expertise to arrange the hauls from El Paso to waiting adoption groups. We would especially like to thank that small band of people who gathered before dawn at the Mexican border and made it all happen. Our special thanks here at GPA-NMGC go to Brian and Suzanne Brannan (Suzanne is our Santa Fe representative) and Suzanne’s Dad, Luke who drove to El Paso and with no sleep helped transport the Greyhounds across the border. Special thanks also to GPA-NMGC volunteers Chris Campbell (who opened her backyard to hold 16 Juarez Greyhounds hauled in by GPA-Arizona’s Jim McDowell), Joan Smith and Carrie Atkins. These volunteers helped in so many ways from bathing the hounds to fostering. All the above mentioned people and adoption groups are the TRUE GREYHOUND WELFARE ADVOCATES.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREYHOUND PETS OF AMERICA

Posted by Glenn Laguna on May 22nd, 2007 .

by Rory Gory, President, Greyhound Pets of America
Twenty years ago this April, GPA opened it’s doors for business. Our first Greyhound to be adopted was from one of our original chapters, GPA-Massachusetts, the Greyhound’s name, Rise. No one at that time could have known how appropriate that name would be for a young organization that would eventually grow to be the worlds largest single breed adoption program.

I would like to say thank you and offer my warmest congratulations to all volunteers who have participated with GPA in the last 20 years and also my best wishes for another 20 years of continued service. It’s because of you that we have been able to defy all odds, naysayers and have found homes for over 65,000 Greyhounds.

I personally have always felt at home in GPA, because of your professionalism, fellowship and service. Together we have contributed to the quality of many households by introducing them to the wonders of Greyhounds as pets.

I believe our future is bright, but only if we are able to improve upon the past and tackle the challenges of today and by ‘we’ I mean all involved in the lives of racing Greyhounds. Your service and commitment is greatly appreciated.
